Sainsbury’s, one of the largest UK supermarkets, is set to expand their line of vegan cheese. It follows huge demand for the products since they launched last year.

Sainsbury’s will now launch a vegan blue cheese, cheddar style slices and cheddar with chives. They plan on launching the cheese this autumn with the supermarket also recently beginning to sell vegan pizza in stores.

Affectionately named ‘Gary’ by British vegans, the cheese instantly became a hit and shot to being one of the top competitors for established vegan cheese brands such as Violife.

It also prompted rival supermarket, Tesco, to release their own line of vegan cheese. Plant-based cheese sales exceeded expectations by 300%, surprising supermarket supremos.

Alexa Masterson, Sainsbury’s product developer for Deliciously FreeFrom said: “When ‘Gary’ went viral last year, the positive response from customers was fantastic.

“It became very clear that the Deliciously FreeFrom range, as well as being a great option for customers with allergies or intolerances, is also increasingly popular with those who choose to avoid certain foods – vegans were among the earliest adopters of our coconut-based alternatives to cheese.”
