A petition titled ‘Put a VEGAN meal on every school, college, university, hospital and prison menu‘ has recently been gaining support and currently sits at around 3,200 signatures. The petition comes at a time where over 5% of the UK population is vegan, with that number increasing every year.
Summed up nicely, ‘A vegan diet is healthier, it conserves resources and protects the planet, above all it’s cruelty free. United Nations has called upon us to consume more plant based foods. Animal products are linked to the increase in cancer and heart disease.’
It’s worth mentioning the horrific plates of food children, students, patients and inmates are currently served up. Basic plates of food consisting of a form of meat and usually dairy or egg. I know I wouldn’t want my child to be severely damaging their health through being forced to eat one of these typical meals. Instead, children who choose to be vegan are forced to eat chips almost every day, with no other options being provided on their local school menu.
The sad fact is that the government continue to ignore the importance of a vegan diet. It would save billions of pounds in healthcare, massively reduce their environmental impact and save billions of animals a year. You will struggle to find a British politician openly talk about the benefits of a vegan diet or lend any support to the movement.
With the ever-growing amount of vegans in the UK, there rightly should be at least one option on every menu. We’re starting to see this in high-street restaurants but we could be waiting a long while longer for change to come about in the public sector.
It’s promising to see movements like this gain momentum but the disappointing fact is that the money-focused government could strike the idea down with no thorough thought.
The only thing you can do is sign the petition and hope your voice is heard.
