They started as an organic produce delivery company but now Globally Local have opened their second set of doors, a vegan fast food restaurant. Based in Ontario, Canada, it is the world’s first 24-hour vegan drive-thru.
The business did not start out as vegan, but James McInnes and his wife, Lia McInnes gradually turned their store into a vegan haven.
It started with recipe ideas on their Facebook page, grew to prepare organic vegan delivery boxes and now they’re exploding into fast food.
“Four and a half years ago, you wouldn’t see the word vegan anywhere,” James says. “It’s really changed a lot.”
A lot of the items on Globally Local’s menu are vegan spinoffs of menu items you can find at McDonald’s. The most popular item on the menu, the Famous Burger, is their take on the Big Mac. They also have their own versions of a McChicken and Burger King’s Whopper.
For James, his decision to go vegan was part of a personal effort to combat health issues.
“I had high blood pressure, and I was pretty young, so I was surprised that I had it,” James says. “I wasn’t eating bad food, I was just eating what normal people eat, and through that style, I got pretty sick. I went vegan to try and help it, and all my medical conditions went away.”
James believes it’s a paradigm shift. Trends come and go, but James doesn’t believe this is the case with veganism.

“I think this is something that’s changing the world . . . I think it’s something that’s here to stay.”
James goes on to say that around 90 percent of his customers are not vegan and it’s many people’s openness to try it that has led to the huge success of the vegan movement.
