Doug Schmidt suffered a near fatal heart attack at the age of 49, and after going vegan, now uses his experience to inspire others to do the same.
The heart attack was a kind so severe, it is often referred to as ‘the widow maker’.
Doug leads a “10-Day Jumpstart Your Health Challenge”, and has encouraged 1,300 people within the US to take part.
The challenge was launched three years ago, and only attracted 30 participants in its first year of existence.
Schmidt has said: “We talk about moving the needle from unhealthy omnivore to healthy vegan.”
“We are moving that needle one person at a time, a bit closer to helping them find true health.”
By taking part in the challenge, you receive a free T-shirt and are given resources such as a website, Facebook group, and copy of The Engine 2 Diet—a plant-based food plan created by vegan ex-firefighter Rip Esselstyn.
Schmidt, now 59, has also won the award of ‘sexiest vegan over 50’, and claims his wife finds it rather amusing.
Thanks to his healthy vegan diet, Doug has been off of heart medication for the past 2 and a half years, and has lost over 60 pounds.
He also finished his first full marathon in September, and wishes he made this lifestyle change earlier on in his life.
