Is Veganism A Cult?

If I had a dollar for every time an uninformed journalist or person claimed that veganism is a cult, I would be a very rich woman. Not only is trying to make veganism a cult utter BS, but it’s yet another shit excuse to give people as to why they shouldn’t step up and do the right thing.

So, is veganism a cult? First off, let’s look at the 3 definitions google gives you for the word ‘cult’.

  1. a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
  2. a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
  3. a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.

is veganism a cult?

Veganism is not religious, nor is it directed towards a public figure or object. It is a movement based on scientific research as well as ethical beliefs, and does not worship nor pray to any figure. In fact, a large amount of the movement are secular.

They are also neither a small group of people. There are more than half a million vegans living in the UK alone!

Although meat eaters may find our beliefs strange, as they are against the norm, there is nothing sinister about them. I believe eating the flesh, period and breast milk of other animals is a bit more sinister than veganism, don’t you agree?

And thirdly, we don’t admire a particular person or thing. We are a lifestyle/ social justice movement, with ideas and beliefs that don’t include any particular deity, leader, or object.

is veganism a cult

You would never consider calling any other social justice movement a cult, so why veganism? Black lives matter, LGBT, civil rights, all of these would never even be considered a cult. Yet, to call veganism a cult seems like no big deal.

We believe that we are not superior to animals, it’s as simple as that. Animals are not ours to use, entertain us, test on or eat, yet apparently this is too complicated for many to handle? We do not gain anything from this movement, and focus on equal rights. You love your dog, you shouldn’t eat other animals.

Like Black Lives Matter fights against racism, veganism fights against speciesism. There is nothing cult like about believing that we are no better than other animals, and there is nothing upsetting or offensive about it either.

Why do people call veganism a cult?

It’s all down to misinformation. If you don’t know much about something, you’re likely to draw assumptions and jump to conclusions. If you hear someone complaining about veganism being a cult, let them know the truth. That really, it’s a social justice movement, with its only goal being to improve the lives of people and animals across the world.

  1. “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you.” does not mean we should support the suffering that today’s factory farms inflict on animals. Would Jesus support that? Having dominion over animals (Genesis 1:26) doesn’t mean we should show our domination over animals by having them suffer under us….. and by eating most meat sold in stores today, that is exactly what we are doing (Proverbs 12:10 says that the righteous shall have regard for the life of their animals). Yes, we WILL be able to do that if we so choose and if it were vital an necessary (because of our dominion) but in today’s society it isn’t. Having dominion over means to be good stewards for and by having a plant based diet we are being good stewards of both the animals and the planet.

  2. In Genesis Chapter 9: 1-3 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. 2 The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands. 3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.
While you say that Veganism is not religious, it does contradict the Word of God. If you want to eat healthy then that is great. I like Vegan food too but would never consider myself vegan. It goes against the word of God. And they way that some vegan’s act about this is why some people are calling this a cult.
