Following Richard Branson’s investment in Memphis Meats, a ‘clean’ meat business, he believes the world will be meat free in 30 years.
Both Branson and Bill Gates invested up to $17 million into the business which grows ‘clean’ meat from animal cells.
“I’m thrilled to have invested in Memphis Meats,” Branson said in an email in response to questions from Bloomberg News. “I believe that in 30 years or so we will no longer need to kill any animals and that all meat will either be clean or plant-based, taste the same and also be much healthier for everyone.”
Memphis Meats was set up in order to provide an alternative to regular meat. The meat is produced by taking the cells of animals, growing them in a lab, and creating meat which tastes and acts the same as regular meat.
It’s attracted a large number of meat producers across the world who want to remain profitable as the world moves away from traditional meat sources and moves towards “clean” meat or plant-based meats.
Tyson Foods, the world’s largest meat producer has set up a specific venture capitalist fund to purely improve their opportunities to “sustainably feed the world”.
