Bill Clinton has been sporting a very trim figure recently, and thanks his vegan diet for this. However, vegan Bill Clinton went plant based for one very scary reason, his incredibly poor health.
After going through a staggering quadruple heart bypass, Clinton realised that it was time for a lifestyle change. Sadly, he was worried that he wouldn’t even live long enough to be a grandfather.
From visiting vegan cafes to promoting his lifestyle in interviews, he is thriving on the diet and wants others to do the same.
“I didn’t give it a second thought. I realized that I was highly prone to arterial blockage, and I thought I’d cut my chances. I literally wanted to see if I could live to be a grandfather.”
During a talk as a part of this year’s Presidential Leadership Scholars program series, he sat next to George W. Bush and praised his new lifestyle, and how it has allowed him to become the grandfather that he was so scared he would never become.
“[It] changed my life,” he said in Las Vegas, according to Politico. “I might not be around if I hadn’t become a vegan. It’s great.”
Clinton has also been doing extensive research behind the health benefits of veganism, including reading The China Study and work by Dean Ornish.
Although he now enjoys treats such as vegan lasagna and nachos, he explains that when he first went vegan, he had to stick to a very strict diet for his health;
I went on essentially a plant-based diet. I live on beans, legumes, vegetables, fruit. I drink a protein supplement every morning—no dairy—I drink almond milk mixed in with fruit and a protein powder so I get the protein for the day when I start the day up. And it changed my whole metabolism and I lost 24 pounds and I got back to basically what I weighed in high school.
It’s so great to see a vegan Bill Clinton thriving on a vegan diet, and hopefully he will demonstrate to other world leaders that the answer to many of our health problems is right under our noses.
